BUGS & BIRTHDAYS

As a little thank you to Mr. Kato for this summer (and also to provide a more suitable gladiator training ground) I bought him a new bug cage for the beetles we found in Karuizawa. We originally brought back 3 with us but one has already perished. Apparently these bugs lack the ability to roll over if they fall onto their backs and have nothing to grab onto. Left in this state for more then a few minutes the beetles will simply give up on life and choose to die. I prefer to think of it as weeding out the weak.

This guy (or girl) is definitely the alpha bug. It controlled the other two and was the most aggressive by far. Now that the smaller male has died it has calmed down and spends most of its days under the dirt and moves around mainly at night.

This is Towa, one of my English students. He is three years old and comes once a week. Also he loves bugs!

And here are Hisako-san and I making some sweet obstacles for the new training area. We used chop sticks, tooth picks and wood clue. I love craft time!!

Also this week was SHINS BIRTHDAY!!!

We had tons of food and lots of fun. We decorated the living room all afternoon. Shin has been such a good friend to me this summer and it was pleasant bonus to have found another friend in Emi's family. Her oldest brother Kazu has already been a big blessing in my life and now getting to know Shin has been maybe even more special because he has been a pillar for me here in a strange place where I don't really know the language or culture. It was great to get the chance to spend his birthday with him!
