Its Hot!

Allow me to take this time to make a distinction. Florida is humid. I can deal with that. I live there. Tokyo on the other hand, is HUMID. And hot. In August, its VERY hot! According to my Google weather application its currently 35.3 degrees Celsius. That's hot how ever you translate it, but still bearable. Due to the humidity however, it feels several degrees warmer and every inch (or centimeter I suppose) of clothing is sticking to my body in thanks to a fine layer of sweat (which is saltier than normal due to all the soy sauce I've been enjoying recently).

Like I said, I'm from Florida. I'm no stranger to sweat. But make no mistake, this weather would keep most Miami residents locked in their condos with the AC cranked and blankets stuffed in the door cracks guzzling iced tea.

The Japanese seem to have come to grips with this wretched summer weather though. People still enjoy outdoor activities and no essential civic services are shut down. To help cope they even rate the "deliciousness and/or refreshment level" of beer each night on the news based on the humidity and temperature. They even choose this of all times to celebrate many of their local festivals.

One such festival was held in my adopted home town of Sangenjaya this weekend. Despite the heat I went to take a look...

Here I am pictured trading in money for some coupons. I later traded in said coupons for some tacoyaki. Mmmm... fried octopus makes me happy.

It's actually a little cold up here in our little corner of Japan. And the humidity levels give a downright chilly edge to the weather some days. You know, there are some neighbourhoods in a neighbouring village where the average daytime temperature during the summer is 13 degrees Celsius! They sometimes turn their stoves on in August. I guess that means that the Delicious/Refreshing ratings on beer must be pretty low around here, but I bet you anything I'm deriving a lot more pleasure from my fried octopus balls than you are down in Tokyo ;-)

I'm sure you are Luke! I think they rate Aomori as the 2nd best place to eat takoyaki, right behind Sapporo.
